BIRTH

There are three types of Birth Certificates:

1.  Regular Birth Certificates:  These were filed at the time the child was born, or within the first year of birth and they were filed by the attending doctor or midwife.  They are only available from the State Bureau of Vital Statistics.

2.  Delayed Birth Certificates:  These were filed at least 1 year after the birth of the child. (Beginning in 1914 to present). They are only available from the State Bureau of Vital Statistics.

1.  Prior Birth Certificates:  These were filed long after the birth and include people who were born before 1914, when birth certificates were first issued.  Usually, these people needed to obtain a birth certificate to draw some type of check, such as pension  or Social Security, or they needed legal identification for some reason.  These records can date back to the early 1800s.  Anyone applying for such a record had to prove their age through Bible records, Census records, Marriage records, or some other legal document.  They also had to provide witness statements from people who had known them for a certain length of time.  These are available at the State Vital Statistics, and a CD is available from the Arkansas Genealogy Society.

Some of Delayed Birth records are available in Polk County.  ( I have copied these records housed at the Polk County Courthouse; that were filed on or before 1986, and they are in the Mena/Polk County Library.  Here is an Index to that file.)
